Are you sure you activated the proper partitions in VMWare Or, maybe its a permissions problem and you should try running VMWare as root If neither of these work, I would try setting up another virtual machine from scratch to see if the same thing happens. I wont say that I have used a lot of different linux systems. I haven't.
